Weekly Sports Recap: Mariner Athletes Go Fast on Land and Water

At the Arlington Ultralight Airport on October 23, Mariner competed in the Wesco League Cross-Country Championships. Julian Nelson-Sellers (SR) led the boys, placing 42nd with a 17:36.9 5k. Matthew Meisner (SR) finished in 73rd place with a time of 18:11.1, and Aaron Ton (SO) came in 91st place at 18:27.4.

Xitlalli Salinas-Lopez (SO) led the girls with a time of 22:46.6, placing 88th, and Jasmine Jaramillo Cruz (SR) ran a time of 24:04.0, placing 117th.

Mariner will travel to Lakewood High School on Saturday, October 30, for the District 1 XC Championships.


Many personal bests were set against Meadowdale High School on October 21. Three swimmers PR’d in the 50 freestyle. Christy Li (SR) dropped her time from 35.44 to 34.72, Zakiya Nuñez (JR) improved her time from 40.94 to 39.4, and Valeria Ocampo (SR) got her time of 35.66 down to 35.01.

Miranda Maria-Estrada (SR) swam her leg of the 400m freestyle relay in 1:27, three seconds faster than her previous best of 1:30.

In the 500 freestyle, Kailee Abendroth (JR) beat her previous best time of 8:36 by 17 seconds, finishing in 8:19.

Girls Swim & Dive will go against Cascade High School on Tuesday, October 26.


Facing Arlington High School away from home, Varsity Football lost by a score of 57-18 on October 22.

They will play Jackson High School on Friday, October 29.


At Districts, Boys Tennis had two singles and two doubles compete. Danny Nguyen (SR) lost 0-6, Itzack Tambanua (JR) lost 0-6 and 1-6, William Tuju (JR) and Jesus Rangel (SR) lost 5-7, and Dennis Pham (JR) and Aaron Ly (JR) lost 4-6 and 0-6.


Varsity Volleyball lost to Lake Stevens High School 0-3 at home on October 21.

Lake Stevens won Set 1 9-25, Set 2 11-25, and Set 3 7-25.

Girls Volleyball will play Kamiak at home on Thursday, October 28.


Varsity Girls Soccer’s home game to Lake Stevens High School on October 21 was lost 6-0.

They will play Evergreen High School on Wednesday, October 27.
